In my mind, t-shirts fall into two general categories. The first is the “vintage tee” – hefty material, boxy fit, historically accurate details, and so forth. Brands like Velva Sheen, Lady White Co., and many others have made a name in this space. But there is another kind of t-shirt, one that I have been gravitating towards lately. This is the “modern tee” – cut slimmer, with lighter, finer fabrics that have a smooth touch rather than a distinct “beefiness.” […]
A Week in New York
I just returned from a work trip to New York – I didn’t have a ton of time to explore the city on this trip, but it was still a nice change of pace from San Francisco. Weather-wise, I got a bit of everything – some sun, some rain, some cold mornings and warm afternoons. […]
The Menswear Map: Clothing, Accessories, and Services in San Francisco (Updated 2019)
A lot can happen in four and a half years. This was particularly apparent in the “Menswear Map” I made in 2014, which was in dire need of an update. Many new stores have appeared in the area, many have shut their doors, and a good handful have found new addresses in the city. With that in mind, I’ve refreshed this super cool interactive map that should help everyone out, whether you’re just in town for the afternoon or you’re a seasoned local looking for a new place to get a haircut.
Buying Guide: Shetland Sweaters
Well, it’s that time of year again – when San Francisco enters its second summer while the rest of the Northern Hemisphere gets our their scarves and pumpkin carving kits. My body and soul are already deep in autumn, though, as I sit in my apartment with a bad cold making chicken soup for myself. So even though the weather is against me, my thoughts have turned to fall and one of my favorite fall pieces – Shetland sweaters. […]
Los Angeles Getaway
Looking back at what I wrote in 2016, I noticed something interesting – although I traveled more last year than any previous year (1-2 roundtrip flights per month), I only posted one packing laydown. I suppose the constant packing and unpacking left me uninterested in adding any additional steps to the process. Either way, I […]
Meet the Parents
Every now and again I see an article or forum discussion outlining how to dress when meeting the parents of the person you’re dating. The answers are usually to wear something put-together enough to convey respect, but without being overly stuffy – something like an OCBD with a sweater and khakis, and maybe some suede chukkas to finish it off. […]

San Francisco Summer
I told you guys that summers in SF were gray and chilly, and I wasn’t kidding. As an aside – I’ll be in my home state of Oregon for a few days, so regular posting will probably resume some time next week. If you’d like to stay in the loop while I’m away, follow me […]
Summer Staples – 10 Items for Hot Weather
I’m writing this post with a bit of a chip on my shoulder because I know that the San Francisco summer will be a cold, foggy disappointment. The mild SF weather is a blessing and a curse, but in the summer it often feels like the latter. Nonetheless, I know that many of you hail from […]
The In-Between Wardrobe, Part I: The Shirt
The “In-Between Wardrobe” is a series of articles aimed at helping men find items that will play a versatile role in their closet. It is written with the idea that most men don’t wear extremely formal or casual clothing on a regular basis; they usually need items that are somewhere in the middle. See all […]
