The dopp kit – is it a travel necessity or just another unnecessary container within a larger container, meant to hold smaller containers? While I have on occasion thrown one in my weekender bag for short trips, I found them to be cumbersome for longer, airplane-oriented getaways. Dopp kits are generally bulky, and it’s not like I have any shortage of pockets when I travel. For a long time now, I have felt that there’s nothing a dopp kit can do that can’t be done equally well by a sturdy Ziplock bag. That all changed recently, when I was introduced to the MUJI hanging case.
Packing for Amsterdam: A Retrospective
Well, it’s 2018 now and I’m back home in San Francisco. I have a big backlog of posts that I’ll be working on in the next few weeks, so keep an eye out for some fun new content. In the meantime, I wanted to start the year with a look back on my recent post discussing what I brought to Amsterdam. […]
Adventures in Amsterdam
Last week I left San Francisco and embarked on a bit of an adventure. Due to a flexible work arrangement and a general fatigue of SF, I decided to head out of town for a while to give myself a change of scenery. […]
Product Review: Away Carry-On Luggage (& Comparison to MUJI 33L)
I’ve been doing a lot of flying lately. And because of that, I’ve been talking a lot more about how I travel and what I use. My review of the MUJI 33L carryon was one of the top posts from last year, and I’ve received many questions on how it compares to Away, a potential competitor I mentioned in that article. I’ve since acquired one of their carryons and had some time to travel with it – here’s the review you’ve asked for, as well as how it compares to the MUJI. […]
An Expedition to England
I recently arrived in the UK and will be here for the next week – first up in Edinburgh and surrounding areas for a couple days, and then down to London. If you have any tips for me while I’m here, let me know – it’s my first time here and my schedule is flexible! It should be a cool, damp trip, so here’s what I packed:
Los Angeles Getaway
Looking back at what I wrote in 2016, I noticed something interesting – although I traveled more last year than any previous year (1-2 roundtrip flights per month), I only posted one packing laydown. I suppose the constant packing and unpacking left me uninterested in adding any additional steps to the process. Either way, I […]
Product Review: MUJI 33L Suitcase
A couple of years ago I was having an email conversation with a few other blogger friends about packing for air travel. One guy was about to begin traveling extensively for work, and wanted to get our thoughts on how to do so effectively. Lots of good advice was shared (I still find myself re-reading the conversation every now and again), but there was one looming, unanswered question -is there a roller suitcase that is both functional and affordable without being horrendously unattractive? […]
Packing Light and Dressing Right
There are many great guides on ultralight packing while traveling, but I find that they generally sacrifice style in the process. Sure, you can travel Europe for two weeks with only a pair of crosstrainers, a tshirt, and zip-off hiking pants, but that’s not the type of vacation that people on this blog dream about. Traveling light is great, but how can we do it without looking terrible? […]
A Trip to Europe
Apologies for the radio silence recently – I’ve been busy with a few things, but most notable is the fact that I’ve been out of the country for the last week. I plan on getting back to my regular posting schedule somewhat soon, but in the meantime here’s what I brought with me: Navy flannel […]
