Although we do seem to be creeping back to “normal” life in recent months, the tailored portion of my wardrobe has remained deep in the recesses of my closet. It has nothing to do with my enjoyment with wearing it – I still quite like that part – but, as with everyone else, the opportunity to do so in a socially appropriate setting has dwindled significantly. This means that I have to make my own opportunities, and so on my recent trip to Mexico City I decided to incorporate some tailoring just for the heck of it.
Did the occasion call for it? No. Is tobacco linen really the right color for my complexion? Also no. Did it help me stay cool in the summer heat? Not really. But after all we’ve been through in the last two years, we have to start admitting that we like clothing in part just because it’s fun.
Anyway, this is what I’m calling my “sleazy suit” look – throwing together bold fabrics, camp collars over lapels, clear frames with bottle green lenses, lots of wrinkles, and two years worth of messy hair on top. If I had a gold Rolex Day-Date, this would be a great time to pull it out.
The suit is from Spier and Mackay, in the perennially popular tobacco linen from Minnis. The suit is in their very #menswear Neapolitan cut and features wide lapels, curved front quarters, 3-roll-2 button front, and single pleats on the trousers. Great for dressing up for no occasion at all.
