The Bay Area had a brief taste of autumnal weather this past weekend, and I took full advantage of it by wearing a few of my favorite casual pieces. Although I have yet to go “full workwear” with my wardrobe, my Western-inspired garments have been a core part of the rotation for these deeply casual days. My heart is still with the sartorial stuff, but I just can’t bring myself to reach a sportcoat and brogues it when it’s unlikely I’ll even leave my apartment.
The RRL cardigan that I picked up earlier this year is definitely the star item here. These things are legendary, and with good reason. They’re knitted by hand, a process that can take over 130 hours. The wonderful designs are inspired by Navajo blankets, and somehow seem to span between way-over-the-top and surprisingly versatile. And while it weights about 10 lbs, the linen/wool/silk/cotton/alpaca blend is so open and gauzy that it’s not overly warm (which I quite like – if this was pure wool, it would be way too hot for me to ever wear). It’s a little bit costume-y and a little bit the Dude, but it strikes a great chord against the generally mellow demeanor of my wardrobe.
