I thought about starting this article by saying that spring is on the horizon, which means that we can finally put our boots away and start reaching for sneakers. But the weather in San Francisco has been so strange lately that I honestly have no idea what season is coming up. My own wardrobe has tilted a bit toward the casual in recent years so I’ve found myself thinking about sneakers more, regardless of what the weather chooses to do. The newest pair in my stable is the “Morgen” by Beckett Simonon, a young brand that some of you are likely familiar with. […]
The Problem with Excellent Products
We all have those products that we lust over for long periods of time. There’s the endless ‘research,’ the search for discounts, and, eventually, the hunt for something similar that doesn’t cost as much. If you finally buy that thing that is exactly what you want (and it hopefully lives up to your very high expectations), it can be a wonderful feeling. But there is an inherent problem with these great products, too. […]
Lost Monarch – My New Project
You may have noticed that I’ve been a little light on blog posts lately. While I certainly wish that I had a bit more time to create great #content, most of it has been taken up by a new project. As I’ve been hinting at on social media for a couple of months, I’ve had something in the works for a while and I’m excited to share it with you all today. […]
The Menswear Map: Clothing, Accessories, and Services in San Francisco (Updated 2019)
A lot can happen in four and a half years. This was particularly apparent in the “Menswear Map” I made in 2014, which was in dire need of an update. Many new stores have appeared in the area, many have shut their doors, and a good handful have found new addresses in the city. With that in mind, I’ve refreshed this super cool interactive map that should help everyone out, whether you’re just in town for the afternoon or you’re a seasoned local looking for a new place to get a haircut.
Product Review: Proper Cloth Washed Denim Shirts
It’s no secret that Proper Cloth is my favorite shirtmaker. There are many places to get a custom shirt these days, but I have yet to find anybody that has the same level of user-friendly-ness, curated-but-thorough design options, and top-tier fabrics. They just released their newest batch of washed denim shirts this week, so I […]
Product Review: Sons of Henrey Wholecut Chelsea Boot
The menswear resurgence of the past 10 years has been wonderful for the discerning customer, but tough for mid-market brands. It seems like every week there is a new story about a brand or retailer in trouble, stuck between customers that want fast fashion prices and those that want luxury products. Personally, I love the middle of the market – I find that it’s where the products of highest value often exist, and that’s usually my first priority when deciding where to purchase. A new member to the club of “not expensive, not cheap, but definitely good” is footwear brand Sons of Henrey, founded earlier this year. […]
It’s On Sale: Deep Discounts at Brooks Brothers and J. Crew
Did we just go back in time to Black Friday? Two surprisingly good post-Thanksgiving sales popped up today, from two classic menswear brands. J. Crew is offering 48% off nearly everything in the store, making it a good time to get anything that was missed during the 50% off Black Friday bonanza. Meanwhile, Brooks Brothers […]
A Holiday Gift Guide for the Menswear-Inclined: 2018
Here it is – my sixth annual gift guide. The frequent holiday sales make it too easy to focus on buying for ourselves and forget about the impending holidays; I’m here to remind you that it’s time to put that shoe purchase on the backburner and start planning out what you’re getting your loved ones. This list is for the men that deserve your gratitude this year – maybe it’s a brother, a father, a friend, a husband, or someone else entirely. No matter what relation, here’s your unequivocal menswear-ish gift guide for this holiday season. […]
Black Friday Week Sales: FSTB Picks
Well, we’re here – it’s the biggest shopping week of the year. Over the years I’ve participated less and less in Black Friday, but it’s hard to deny that there are some great deals to be had. My recommendation is to only buy things that you would have purchased anyway, as to reduce spontaneous spending […]
It’s On Sale: the Abercrombie & Fitch Dad Coat
It’s no secret that the biggest sale week of the year is around the corner (and I’m working on putting together a short list of my favorite discounted products). But although Black Friday is still a week away, the continually increasing competition between online retailers means that these sales are constantly being pushed forward. All […]
