It’s been a while since we did one of these, hasn’t it?
Although I’ve been traveling a good amount over the past year or so, I haven’t taken the time to post much about it here. Time to change that with a recent weekend trip to Mexico City.
One of the many difficult additions to the already burdensome international flight process in recent years is that more airlines seem to be enacting weight limits on their carryon baggage – not only does this make checking in an even more annoying process, but it also means that packing light is more than just worrying about suitcase dimensions. And lord knows I’m not about to spend $80 to check a bag for a three-day trip.
I had to limit my carryon to 10kg (~22lbs) – for this reason, I skipped the heavy Away aluminum suitcase and went with my often overlooked duffel from Ernest Alexander. Here’s what I brought:
- Lightweight M-65 – Mexico City is high elevation and gets cool in the evening.
- Flannel shirt for the plane
- Terry cloth drawstring shorts
- Swim trunks for the hotel pool
- Some heavily faded 501s
- Two short-sleeve printed shirts
- Two t-shirts
- Clear-framed P3 sunglasses
- Tobacco linen suit – I mean, why not?
Not pictured: one pair of beat up sneakers. I’ve found that when working to eliminate packing weight or bulk, removing shoes is the best way to do it. By wearing my only pair on the plane I had no problem fitting everything in a medium-sized duffel.
Total weight: ~5kg. Time for tacos!
