It’s the most wonderful time of the year, in my opinion. With summer officially behind us we can shift our focus to what we’ve all been waiting for – not just platitudes of the incoming autumnal season, but previews of Fall/Winter collections. Yes, the leaves may be changing, but let’s look at pictures of tweed sportcoats instead. Here are a few of the products and brands that are catching my eye right now:
Todd Snyder
One of my favorite brands of late has come out swinging with a very exciting collection. Lots of drapey suits, big coats, and subdued colors. There is a lot to like here; in particular, I’m very interested in the outerwear like this amazing blamacaan. These corduroy western shirts caught my eye, too, and check out the proportions on the new tailoring. New products are getting added regularly, and you can find them here.
RRL
It’s been a big year for my cowboy fantasies, given my recent travels to New Mexico, Montana, and Oregon. Double RL continues to be the leader in the western-inspired space, and once again they have a handsome collection. The prices are too high and the sales are too infrequent, but that’s just the way it is now. Some notable standouts for me are the shearling vest, quilted overshirt, and, of course, the hand-knit cardigans (1,2 – you can see mine here).
Spier & Mackay
This excellent source for affordable and well-made menswear continues to improve every season. While not necessarily inventive, there are tons of pieces in the new collection that I would absolutely wear. A couple favorites that are currently live include this Harris Tweed herringbone sportcoat (which reminds me of my grandpa), moleskin suits, this Valstarino-inspired jacket, and more. There is also a ton of yet-to-be-released product on their Instagram – like this unnecessary but also amazing dinner jacket.
Wythe
This preppier take on westernwear is getting better every season. Some favorite include the moleskin and flannel pearlsnaps, as well as the big raglan overcoat that has yet to be released.
J. Crew
We’re one year past Brendon Babenzein’s arrival at J. Crew, and the preppy mall brand has dropped not one but two fall lookbooks. The first is the official lookbook, and the second focuses on tailoring. The past Spring season was pretty flat to me, but there is quite a bit that I like about the new fall looks. The tailoring looks like something you might see in a Drake’s photoshoot, which is exciting. For the stuff outside of tailoring, This trenchcoat is definitely a favorite, and at some point I’m going to have to try the giant chinos that everyone has been talking about for the past year.
The days may be getting shorter and the nights may be getting colder, but we can all take solace in the autumnal equinox bringing us new inspirations for heavy sweaters and long coats. The menswear season is upon us, and the forecast is looking good.
